| | FANTASTIC!! Also, a question about living w/women « Thread Started on Mar 23, 2007, 6:47pm » | |
I am *thrilled* that this section was added since the last time I was here--I will admit that I felt left out in some of the other threads and couldn't figure out where to ask a few of my questions.
This question will apply to women who have female roommates or live closely with other women:
Do you find your cycles interplaying? My girlfriend's cycle has gone haywire since I have started to treat my endo (prog. cream, eliminating parabens, and extreme diet change). It's almost like it mimics mine now--she is now having ovulatory bleeding, spotting/cramping on the days when I start menstruating, and her symptoms (like pain and cramping) have gotten much worse. I also sometimes have spotting on the second day of her period. Hmm, and now that I think about it, my endo symptoms only started getting bad after she moved in.
I know that women living together (studies mostly done in sororities, I think) tend to synchronize, so there is some chemical or hormonal signal flying around. Does anyone know what those might be? Any ideas to lessen the havoc around here?

I've noticed that since I started back on my period after some hormone treatment, my sister has sychronised with my cycle, not me with her. she is not happy that I messed up her routine! xx

Yeah i think thats pretty common, have heard that before. I grew up with 2 sisters, and from memory, though mine was never regular as a kid, our cycles werent ever too far apart, although id skip occasionally.
Cant provide any solutions, i will say in regards to hormones, that my endo interestingly enough acted up when my niece was born, within days of the birth.

Hey viper! Welcome back, and thanks for creating a thread in this section! It's not a waste of space after all!
I don't know how the synchronizing thing happens either, I just know that it is very normal. Normal for your cycles to coincide, anyway. I haven't heard of cramps being contagious before! That really sucks! I hope I never make a girl start having ovulation cramps!

Thanks for the thoughts, guys!
I have synchronized before, but my previous live-in girlfriends and roommates have all had very similar cycle lengths to mine (27-29 days). My current gf has a much shorter cycle, so I think that's probably what is causing all the havoc.
Hopefully over time one of our cycles will surrender and get longer or shorter.

Yeah I'm not sure what makes this happen, when I could still cheerlead I was doing it 5 days a week, and literally all the girls on the team would have their period at the same time. And there is NOTHING good about 20 pms-ing girls all in one room lol.

I don't know how it happens but it does, its insane! I had irregular periods my whole life and the only time I lived with another girl (housemate) for more than a few months, my cycle was identical to hers! Unfortunately she moved out, we don't speak and I've moved on and its now back to its insane self! Oh well, there's another reason to add to my list of which is better, relationship wise, men or women, I'm pretty torn about it! If I can find the perfect woman with a perfect cycle who can sort mine out that'll do! Don't know how the current bf would take to that idea though? He'll never understand though, but he tries, bless him!

Some studies I've read all point to the biological reasons for the syncronizing. In nature, animals have what you may be familiar as being the "alpha male." Believe it or not, when women syncronize their periods it's usually to mirror the cycle of the dominant female. What's interesting is the first published paper on the study of menstral syncronizing is what initiated the discovery of hormones acting in human bodies. This syncronizing is called the McClintock effect, named after the woman who published her research about this in 1971.

I would be slightly worried that the progesterone cream was having an affect on her. It remains on your skin and may be getting in her system and causing some of the bad effects. (Hence why I won't use it with my kids around) I have no scientific studies to back up my 'theory' though. so maybe its nothing...?

I have a feeling that it has something to do with armpits? Like that we secrete a smell (pheramone type thing) that the less dominant woman falls in line with? Could be completely wrong though! But that's what i think. My mum, sister and i always used to be around the same time when i lived at home, till i went on the pill.

Supposedly that's exactly what it is. It's a smell that we secrete that triggers a hormonal response in the brain. I read a study that researchers did with lab rats. They put one rat each into two seperate cages and then filtered the air from one into the other and it synced the other rat's cycle. I always feel bad when I go to visit back home because my poor baby sister gets all out of wack. Some other studies showed that women who live with a male partner usually have regular periods as opposed to women who live with other women. But it always changes to the women who is more socially dominant. HAHA so wierd!!

Have any of you rear "The Red Tent"? That book is amazing and tells a little about how women who live in close knit communities tend to bleed at the same time each month. My mom and I used to be synched and in college me and my five female roommates always to seemed to start within a few days of one another. I think is it incredible and it seems to speak to the intelligence of the body.

I have read "The Red Tent" we did it for book club last year. It is a very good book! My twin and I were always in synch well before my hyster and her pregnancy. LOL all the girls at the library are also around the same time.
